Build-A-Bear finds ‘Pay Your Age’ promo too successful

Build-A-Bear’s effort to generate excitement for a new promotion instead generated crowds and consternation Thursday, as many shoppers in Columbus and elsewhere who turned out of a “Pay Your Age” day stood in line for hours or were turned away. 

The chain, which offers stuffed animals that can be customized with accessories, had advertised its promotion to loyalty-club members, offering to sell them the animals for the age of the child customer. Stuffed animals at the store typically cost around $20, with accessories costing extra.

The single-day promotion was a kickoff for a bigger one: “Count Your Candles,”
