Indy Zoo welcomes new baby elephant

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Zoo is announcing a new member of its animal family — a baby elephant.

Officials say the 238-pound elephant was born at 5:34 a.m. Wednesday. African elephant Kubwa gave birth to the little one, who is her third. Kubwa is the first African elephant in the world to birth three times through artificial insemination.

Zoo workers have given the calf a small stool to stand on in order to nurse from its mother. Workers say the new elephant has been nursing every hour and Kubwa is being a good mother.
