PORTLAND — The Oregon Zoo officially broke ground on its new $53 million elephant habitat.
The zoo, well-known for its Asian elephant exhibit, plans to expand the current one-and-a-half acre habitat to more than six acres.
When finished, the new exhibit, called Elephant Lands, will provide a roomy home for the zoo’s elephants and be environmentally friendly as well.
Heat from the polar bear exhibit will completely heat the forest hall building attached to Elephant Lands. The elephants’ water will be re-circulated through a filter system instead of being dumped and re-filled.

Royal Oak — A newborn macaroni penguin chick is being reared by its new foster parents after being “hatched” twice at the Detroit Zoo, through a rare technique that’s been used with other bird species at the zoo.
The chick was born May 25 after being artificially incubated for 36 days. After the chick’s mother, 25-year-old Needles, laid the egg April 19, zookeepers pulled it from the nest of the mother and father, 8-year-old Diego, because the nest was next to the penguin habitat’s pool — a risky location for raising chicks.

The 6-year-old male tiger, which had been at the Nandankanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar since April 28, got out Friday night after being moved to an enclosure from the tiger safari, J.D. Sharma, the principal chief conservator of forest wildlife, told the Press Trust of India.
“The tiger escaped from the enclosure after jumping over the 18-feet-high wire fencing,” Forest and Environment Minister Bijayshree Routray said. “His pug marks are
For the first time in more than 20 years, the Denver Zoo is home to a Przewalski’s foal.
Mother Yisun gave birth May 31, the zoo said in a news release. The foal is active under the watchful eye of first-time father Bataar, but zookeepers have yet to determine its gender. It’s the first Przewalski’s foal since 1991.
“The Przewalski’s horse is considered the only remaining truly wild horse in the world,” the zoo said.
The breed, also called Mongolian wild horses or Asiatic wild horses, was actually extinct in its natural habitat of Europe and Asia
