Zoo’s elephant reserve gains three females
FAIRHOPE, Pa. — Three female African elephants are the newest additions to the Pittsburgh Zoo’s elephant program, making it one of the largest in the nation.
Thandi, Seeni and Sukiri are all 18 to 20 years old, and they traveled from Botswana to their new home in Somerset County. The three landed on July 15 and now live in a specially built quarantine area at the zoo’s conservation center. The 20-hour flight went without a hitch, even though the cargo surpassed 30,000 pounds, Barbara Baker, CEO of the zoo, said today at the center.
